EPOS-N: BJØRNØYA SMALL APERTURE ARRAY


From EPOS-N Project description (rev. 10 Jan 2016), p.11:

The new array: We propose to install a nine-element seismic array on the northern part of Bear Island, to the south of the permanent meteorological station, spanning an aperture of 1-2 km.

1 IMPROVING SNR


There is 20-30 dB difference1) in SNR (signal/noise ratio) on existing Bjørnøya seismometer (BJO1) compared to a relatively quiet site in mainland Norway (SKAR), as seen from PDF plots below. In order to detect weaker earthquakes in the region near Bjørnøya, additional sensors in an array configuration are required. To achieve 20 dB better SNR, the number of sensors must be increased by 100 (since 10*log(100) = 20 dB) which is clearly unrealistic. An array of 9 elements would increase SNR by 10*log(9) = 9.5 dB.
